The Ministry of Defense announced the completion of the evacuation of civilians from Azovstal

In Mariupol, the operation to evacuate civilians from the Azovstal enterprise has been completed, the Interdepartmental Coordination Headquarters of the Russian Federation for Humanitarian Response said. Since May 5, when the operation was announced, 51 people have been saved, including 11 children.

“Thanks to the unprecedented measures taken by the leadership of the Russian Federation, with the active participation of representatives of the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross , today completed a humanitarian operation to evacuate civilians from the metallurgical plant “Azovstal”,— cites the statement of the headquarters of the Russian Ministry of Defense in his Telegram channel.

Evacuated from Azovstal people were provided with security, as well as medical and psychological assistance, the report says. After that, they, accompanied by representatives of the UN and the Red Cross, went to selected places of temporary accommodation, the statement said.

Over the past 24 hours, 18,583 people, including 1,841 children, have been evacuated to Russia from dangerous areas of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, as well as Ukraine, to Russia, the headquarters noted. In total, more than 1.1 million people, including more than 205 thousand children, have been transported to Russia since the beginning of the special operation.

On April 21, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu informed Russian President Vladimir Putin about the capture of Mariupol, saying that on the territory of the local enterprise “Azovstal” the “remnants of the nationalists” took refuge. Putin considered the storming of the plant inexpedient, speaking in favor of “preserving the life and health of our soldiers and officers.”

On the same day, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk announced that on the territory of Azovstal there are 500 wounded soldiers and about 1 thousand people. Ukrainian President Zelensky then said that Kyiv would withdraw from the settlement talks if Moscow did not allow the evacuation of people from Mariupol.

In late April, UN Secretary General António Guterres visited Moscow and Kyiv to discuss the evacuation of people from Mariupol, including from “Azovstal”. After negotiations in his office, it was reported that Putin agreed to carry out the evacuation with the participation of representatives of the UN and the Red Cross.

The evacuation began on May 5, the next day, the authorities of the Donetsk People's Republic, as well as the UN reported that a day “Azovstal” 500 people left.
