Playboi Carti Scores His First Billboard No. 1 with “Whole Lotta Red”

Playboi Carti’s new album, Whole Lotta Red, debut at the top of the chart.

Playboi Carti has defied critics of his latest work, Whole Lotta Red, and scored his first No. 1 Billboard 200 album. Billboard revealed that the rapper’s highly-anticipated album soared to the top of the charts as it sold more than 100,000 total album-equivalent units in its opening week.

Most of the album’s sales came from streaming. It earned an impressive 90,000 streaming equivalent album units, which were mostly due to 126 million on-demand streams of the album’s songs. Playboi Carti can claim another accolade because his album was released on Christmas Day, and he now officially holds the title of being the first artist to have a No. 1 album in 2021.

Billboard made the announcement via Twitter. They posted, “Billboard 200: #1(new)
@playboicarti, Whole Lotta Red 100,000 [126.43 million streams].”

Many of the early projections for “Whole Lotta Red” indicated that it would debut at No. 1 even though many fans seemed to be at odds with the prediction. Carti bested his last Billboard showing, which was in 2018. His platinum-selling “Die Lit” came in at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart then. That project sold 61,000 equivalent album units in its first week. In 2017 he got to No. 12 on the chart with his self-titled debut mixtape.

As has become the norm with Playboi Carti, there were several controversial issues surrounding the release of his latest work. While fans practically begged for the album’s release, ardent supporter Mario Judah released his own version of “Whole Lotta Red.” Then just after the release of the official version, Carti’s ex and his child’s mother, Iggy Azalea, took to social media to blast the Atlanta rapper for not being there for his child. Carti responded to the claims by posting photos of himself and his son in the studio together on social media last Sunday, December 27.

Playboi Carti Confirms “Whole Lotta Red” Drops Christmas Day With Kanye West As Producer

Playboi Carti confirmed the release date for his new album, and it’s available to preorder now.

Less than a week before Playboi Carti’s highly anticipated release Whole Lotta Red is slated to hit the shelves, the rapper shared the preorder link with his fans. Taking to social media to confirm the recent speculation spurred on by DJ Akademiks’ source that the album would arrive on Christmas Day, Carti shared a post of what appears to be the album cover art, which reveals it will arrive on “12/25.”

Fans expected the drop to be sooner after Playboi Carti started teasing snippets of the project online, but that was later countered by a source who said it would be released on Friday. The rapper previously revealed that Kanye West is one of the executive producers of the album. Meanwhile, he also said the guest stars include Travis Scott, Future, and he alluded to a joint track with Kid Cudi as well.

The album artwork is a black and white photo of Playboi Carti with the word “Red” dripping across the top in a blood-like animation. Along the side of the photo, it says “the wonderful world of red,” while other details like “volume one” and “number one” raised speculation that it would be a sequel. The cover art also cites the album as a product of Carti’s Opium imprint.

The rapper who has been expressing a barely contained excitement since he submitted the project to his label was thrilled to reveal the album cover on social media. “AHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I t0LD U ! I L0v3 u PRE 0RDeR NOW,” Playboi Carti wrote on Twitter. Over the weekend, he also told fans that Whole Lotta Red is his best work yet. In a follow-up tweet, he said, “oMG ! F**Kkkk . w3 did iT. iM CRYIN.”

Are you as excited as Playboi Carti for the release of Whole Lotta Red this Friday?

12/25 > ?

Iggy Azalea Flames Playboi Carti Over Subliminal Tweets About Her

Iggy Azalea is clapping back at Playboi Carti after his cryptic tweet.

Playboi Carti announced today that he finally delivered his long-awaited sophomore album Whole Lotta Red to his label. In the wake of that revelation, the rapper took to Twitter to make some cryptic posts that fans and his baby’s mother, Iggy Azalea, are trying to decipher. In one tweet, Carti wrote what appeared to be song lyrics but who could ever tell. “I told da bit shut up! My son crying,” he said on Twitter.

The obviously offensive tweet sparked speculation among fans that Carti was alluding to rapper Iggy, who recently had his baby. It turns out Carti’s former flame was also a bit curious about what her baby daddy meant and questioned it openly on Twitter as well. “Did you?” Iggy asked with a direct reply to Carti’s tweet. She later directed her sass at fans for getting her involved.

“Y’all wrong as hell for your dumb a** Lil tweets,” Iggy wrote in response to the conversation online about her. “Why I gotta log on and see my name dragged in dirt over a random cryptic a** tweet that hasn’t got sh*t to do with me! For WHAT!? I mind my business. I hope your Mac & cheese burns in the oven on Thursday. Night!” Since Iggy is an Australian native, many found it hilarious that the rapper took shots at the thanksgiving tradition. “D*mn not the mac and cheese,” one fan commented.

Iggy later cleared up the whole drama and announced that Playboi Carti confirmed his tweet wasn’t about her. “I spoke to my sons father and apparently that isn’t meant to be about me,” she wrote. “Apparently,” she reiterated. She might not sound convinced that it wasn’t about her but she wants to make it clear that her baby daddy denied it.

Let’s see if we hear the cryptic words again in any of Playboi Carti’s new songs from his upcoming album.

I just spoke to my sons father and apparently that isn’t meant to be about me. Apparently.
