Artist allegedly lured students to his Sydney home before sexually assaulting them, court told

Sydney 2000

Famous street artist Anthony Lister allegedly lured and drugged “young, impressionable” art students before sexually assaulting them in his Sydney home, a court has heard.

  • Lister is accused of sexually assaulting four women aged 18 and 19
  • The 40yo is facing 18 charges including sexual assault, grievous bodily harm and drug possession
  • The street artist has been granted bail on a $20,000 deposit posted by his mother

Lister, 40, was also recorded on CCTV allegedly removing bags of what police suspect was evidence from storage units in Moore Park in late February before his arrest, Sydney’s Central Local Court was told.

The CCTV footage was captured about two weeks before Lister was charged over the alleged sexual assault of four women, in separate incidents, between 2015 and 2018.

He has been in custody since last week when NSW Police raided his Darlinghurst home and one of his studios in Marrickville.

Police prosecutor Kerry-Ann McKinnon today told the court Lister “lured” the budding artists to his house and talked them into participating in “some kind of art activity”.

“These young, impressionable women are drugged and then acts of a sexual nature occur,” she said during a bail application.

Senior Constable Sean O’Brien told the court an Instagram conversation took place on February 27 in which Lister discussed some of the allegations with a woman who police suspect was present during one of the alleged assaults.

Lister allegedly wrote: “After my art show in Wollongong I’m buying a ticket to LA stat”.

Senior Constable O’Brien said the storage units, which were rented under someone else’s name, were last accessed by Lister the same day as the Instagram conversation.

“We have CCTV of Mr Lister exiting with bags,” he told the court.

“We suspect there is further evidence. We are aware he was aware of the investigation at that time and was seen to be leaving the units with items.”

Allegations ‘extremely serious’: Magistrate

Police have already seized about 30 hard drives and a number of USB devices from the storage unit, but they are yet to be analysed.

Senior Constable O’Brien said a further two complainants would shortly be interviewed.

Lister’s barrister, Hament Dhanji SC, said none of the separate allegations against Lister were strong and they relied on the evidence of each of the complainants.

He said Lister took part in a police interview in which he denied the allegations and could not be considered a flight risk due to current travel restrictions because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Magistrate Clare Farnan said the allegations were “extremely serious” and could result in a “lengthy” full-time prison sentence.

Lister was granted bail on a $20,000 deposit posted by his mother, and other conditions including not to contact any witnesses.

The four original women were aged 18 or 19 at the time of the alleged offences and Lister is also accused of tattooing three lines on one of the complainants without her consent.

Lister, who was born in Brisbane, has become one the country’s most internationally-recognised artists and his work has been collected by Hugh Jackman, Pink and Pharrell Williams.

His distinctive style and tag appears not only in galleries, but many public spaces around Australia, particularly in Sydney’s inner west.

In a statement last week, Lister’s lawyers said he was “distressed and hurt” by the charges and “emphatically” denied wrongdoing.

The statement said the matter would become a test case on “the responsibilities of men and women in sexual encounters to themselves and to each other”.

NSW MP’s son pleads not guilty to assaulting police

Bathurst 2795

A court has heard CCTV failed to capture the moment the son of New South Wales MP Philip Donato allegedly assaulted police officers at Bathurst in the state’s central west.

Peter Christopher Donato has pleaded not guilty after being charged with attacking the officers outside the Oxford Hotel in April 2019.

The alleged assault occurred after Mr Donato and his friends were denied entry to the pub because police believed they were intoxicated.

Senior Constable Kyle Bugden gave evidence about the moments leading up to the incident.

The Bathurst Local Court has heard the hotel’s CCTV did not record two minutes just before 10 o’clock that night, which is the time that the alleged assault occurred.

In cross examination, Senior Constable Bugden agreed with the defence counsel, Mason Manwaring, that it was “remarkable” that the security camera failed at that “critical” time, but told the court the hotel’s CCTV had previously been faulty.

Senior Constable Bugden was also questioned about whether Mr Donato threw punches and whether they hit his colleague, Senior Constable Burden.

Senior Constable Bugden replied “Yeah, I believe they did”.

Senior Constable Bugden told the court he believed Senior Constable Burden fell to the ground as a result of “physical contact” with Mr Donato.

“I don’t know whether it was the result of punches or physical grabbing,” Senior Constable Bugden told the court.

The trial continues.

‘No respect’: Police charge teens after video reveals bus robbery

Townsville 4810

Police have condemned the actions of a group of young people caught on camera accosting a bus driver and robbing passengers in north Queensland.

Key points:

  • Two teenage boys charged after bus driver assaulted and passenger robbed
  • One also charged over convenience store robbery
  • Police still seeking up to eight other suspects

Two boys aged 13 and 14 have been charged with robbery after police were handed CCTV vision of the incident, which occurred in Townsville last Wednesday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Miles said it was a prolonged and brazen incident.

“We had a number of young people — about 10 males and females — who have accosted a bus driver and also a number of members of public on the bus,” he said.

He said police will allege money, headphones and other personal items were stolen from people on the bus.

The bus was also graffitied.

Detective Senior Sergeant Miles said the teenagers also tried to assault a female passenger.

He said the CCTV shows the woman fending off one boy as he tried to take her handbag when she boarded the bus.

“It’s clear from the footage that they have no respect for property or any of the persons involved,” he said.

“Quite frankly, they think it’s a joke.”

Detective Senior Sergeant Miles said no-one was seriously injured in the incident.

“We are positive that we’ve been able to identify who those eight young people are, and will be attempting to have them placed either before the courts or have them dealt with under youth justice provisions in the near future.”

Two boys will appear in Townsville Children’s Court on Wednesday over the bus incident, and one of them also faces charges for a convenience store robbery that occurred afterwards.

“Two young people have walked into the store and observed the attendant to be at the rear of the store,” Detective Senior Sergeant Miles said.

“[The attendant was] shoulder charged and then physically assaulted by the young people before they made off with a small amount of goods.”

Possible bikie link to firebombing and shooting at popular Brisbane bar Mr Percival’s

Brisbane 4000

An arson attack and a shooting at a popular Brisbane restaurant may involve people linked to the Bandidos motorcycle club, the ABC understands.

Key points:

  • The ABC understands the police investigation is examining whether people are involved who have links to the Bandidos
  • A number of people involved in confrontations with Mr Percival’s staff late last year are “known to the police”
  • Vision is released of a man police would like to speak with over the arson incident

Multiple shots were fired into the bar and restaurant Mr Percival’s at Brisbane’s Howard Smith Wharves early on Monday morning but workers inside the business at the time were unharmed.

CCTV footage has been released of a person of interest in the arson attempt early on December 21.

The ABC understands the police investigation is examining whether people with links to the Bandidos outlaw motorcycle club are involved.

Detective Superintendent Tony Fleming said a number of people involved in confrontations with staff late last year were “known to the police”.

He said a small rubber boat found in the Norman Park reach of the Brisbane River yesterday afternoon was believed to have been involved in the shooting.

“While it remains for the investigation to confirm whether or not this is actually the vessel involved in the shooting, we’re treating it as such at the moment and it has been the subject of forensic examination,” he said.

“We know the boat was stolen just before Christmas from Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast.”

Detective Superintendent Fleming said the case was of “significant concern” to police.

“While at the moment only property has been damaged, the risk to community safety is significant,” he said.

“I think it’s hard to overstate people discharging firearms into buildings, in public spaces, self-evidently carries significant risk.”

Detective Superintendent Fleming said he urged anyone with information to contact police.

“We know in crimes like this that people talk,” he said.

“It’s quite feasible that someone knows who was responsible for this offence and we would encourage them to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.

“Officers have conducted doorknocks there today and we certainly have spoken to people, but if you live in that area and you may have some information or CCTV, we’re very keen to hear from you.”
