‘She managed to grow very old and somehow, not old enough’: Actors, comedians and a president pay tribute to Betty White

Film stars, comedians and politicians have led tributes to Betty White, remembering her as a pioneering actress, a cultural icon and the only Saturday Night Live host to receive a standing ovation at the program's after-party.

A mainstay of US television for more than 60 years, White's death was announced on Friday, less than three weeks from her 100th birthday

Ryan Reynolds, who starred alongside White in 2009 comedy The Proposal, was among the first to share his memories of the former Golden Girls actor.

Fellow US TV star Henry Winkler paid tribute to White on Twitter, noting that it was hard to come to terms with her absence given her longevity.

White was a pioneering woman in the US television industry,  co-founding a production company as well as serving as a co-creator, producer and star of the 1950s sitcom Life With Elizabeth.

American filmmaker and writer Nancy Meyers, known for her work producing films like The Intern, Father of the Bride and The Parent Trap, credited White with blazing a trail for female creators.

TV star Marlee Matlin responded to the news of White's passing by posting an image of the front cover of People magazine, celebrating what would have been White's 100th birthday later this month.

Stars remembered White not just for making them laugh in front of the camera, but behind it too.

Late-night TV host and former Saturday Night Live (SNL) cast member Seth Meyers remembered White's appearance on SNL for her efforts at the show's afterparty. White also went on to win an Emmy for her work on the show proper.

Comedian and longtime Conan O'Brien sidekick Andy Richter remembered the Golden Girl as a low-maintenance figure behind the scenes despite her widespread popularity.

Indie rock musician and child actress Jenny Lewis posted a short clip from her guest appearance on The Golden Girls, noting White's kindness on set, despite their on-screen characters coming into conflict.

Tributes poured in even from the more serious side of the US television industry. Journalist and former news broadcaster Dan Rather paid tribute to the way White carried herself through life.

Testament to White's stature in American culture, White's passing was also noted by US political figures.

US President Joe Biden and Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi both paid tribute to an actress they described as a US entertainment icon.
