Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a conversation with Cuban leader Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, did not touch upon the issue of deepening the military-technical cooperation and deployment of military bases on the island, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
The Kremlin representative gave a negative answer to the relevant question of journalists. Peskov added that relations between the two states “have deep traditions” and “filled with specific content.”
“Synchronization of positions on international and regional issues that are of mutual interest is extremely important. And this is exactly what the leaders of the two countries were talking about yesterday, — said the press secretary (quote from TASS).
Putin and Diaz-Canel had a telephone conversation the day before, on January 24. The Kremlin's message noted that the leaders discussed issues of “coordinating the actions of the two countries in the international arena in accordance with the principles of strategic partnership and traditions of friendship and mutual understanding.” On January 20, the Russian president also spoke by phone with another Latin American leader, the head of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro.
In December, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said in an interview with RTVI that Moscow, after unsuccessful talks with Washington on security guarantees is considering the possibility of deploying Russian troops in Cuba or Venezuela.
Peskov, earlier commenting on the possibility of deploying weapons in Latin America, said that against the backdrop of escalating tensions, Russia is considering various options for ensuring its security. At the same time, he noted that during the talks with Maduro, Putin also did not discuss the deployment of Russian military bases in Venezuela.
