The International Committee of the Red Cross is preparing a letter to the Ukrainian authorities to resolve the fate of Russian sailors detained in the republic, Ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova said on the air of “Russia 24” with reference to the head of the organization, Peter Maurer.
“I asked to visit these sailors and provide humanitarian assistance. I received a positive response. Mr. Maurer said that a special document is being prepared now, a letter to the Ukrainian side to resolve this issue, — clarified the commissioner for human rights.
She said that 77 sailors remain in Ukraine, who are “prevented from returning to their homeland.” The same number of sailors held in Moskalkova’s apparatus was named in early May.
The press service of the Commissioner explained that all of them were civilians and were part of the crews of eight ships.
Before that, Moskalkova had repeatedly reported on the release on Ukraine, Russian sailors held after the start of the Russian special operation. In April, the Russian military in the port of Mariupol released 14 sailors from the civilian ship Azov Concorde. In May, 11 crew members of the Avangard ship, which arrived in the Odessa region at the end of last year for repairs, returned to Russia. After the start of the military operation, the sailors were blocked by the security of the port of the city of Izmail and border guards.
