Iran and the US will resume talks on a nuclear deal, said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell in Twitter.

“At a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, we agreed to resume negotiations between Iran and the United States in the coming days with the assistance of my team to resolve the last outstanding issues,”— said Borrell.

The head of EU diplomacy noted that three months have passed since he suspended the negotiations in Vienna. He felt that the parties need to speed up the work and close the deal now.

The Iranian minister confirmed that the country is ready to resume the negotiation process within a few days, Reuters reported. He expressed the hope that this time the United States will make real steps to complete the negotiations, and Iran will receive economic benefits.

The US, France, UK, Germany, China, Russia and Iran signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). They agreed not to impose sanctions on Tehran if the country abandons the development of nuclear weapons, limits uranium enrichment and gives IAEA inspectors access to all nuclear facilities in the country.

However, under the presidency of Donald Trump, the United States withdrew from the nuclear deal with Iran accusing the country of violating the agreement. After that, Tehran began to exceed the permissible level of uranium enrichment, and also limited cooperation with the IAEA.

The next American president, Joe Biden, in September 2021, announced his readiness to return to the nuclear deal with Iran. On March 15, 2022, State Department spokesman Ned Price reported that negotiations were close to the finish line, but some difficult issues remained unresolved. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov then emphasized that the restoration of the JCPOA would lead to the return of Iranian oil to the market.

In April, the Iranian parliament put forward conditions for the renewal of the nuclear agreement to President Ibrahim Raisi. Among them— the US refusal to impose new sanctions against Iran, lifting restrictions on oil exports from Iran and legal guarantees approved by the US Congress that Washington will not withdraw from the agreements.

On June 23, Sergey Lavrov held talks with the head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry. He stated that Russia will seek to restore the JCPOA on the nuclear program in its original configuration, without any changes.
